Flying into Windhoek shows an arid plain below with what looks - from altitude - like puddles of water, but as you lose height you realise that it is just scrub bush. The tracks are few and far between and roads are almost non-existent. Our tour guides tell us that we are in for an interesting time - which given that a lot of risks seem to be uninsurable seems a bit daunting! If you drive into an animal it's YOUR fault.
The drive into Windhoek was also interesting; there is so much space, but so many of the houses are crowded together in gated communities with electric fencing for security. There is a certain irony when you see that a lot of money has been spent to add features to the modern dwellings to make them look like the traditional kraals of the indigenous population.
But we are on holiday and have at least have had two days in a very nice country club with a very nice beer at £2.50 a pint - and some equally good food to go with it.
Tomorrow is an early start heading off for the desert.
